In the realm of artisanal soy wax production, candle cracking is a prevalent quandary faced by diligent craftsmen. What causes these fissures in candles? And more importantly, are there remedies to alleviate this predicament? Allow me to elucidate upon the factors that contribute to cracked candles and proffer potential solutions thereto.
Reason 1: The Candle Cools Too Fast
Cracks on the surface of the candle are usually caused by cooling too quickly. In the candle making process, we would like to speed up the production process to get the finished candle faster. But if the candle cools down too quickly, this can cause cracks to appear on the surface of the candle.
Solution: After pouring the wax into the container, we need to keep the temperature in the room stable, and then let it cool down slowly and evenly.
Reason 2: Candles are frozen
Solution: Candles become brittle when frozen, which can cause cracks on the surface. To avoid breakage, stop storing candles in the refrigerator.
Reason 3: Extreme temperature (too high or too low)
Maintaining the proper temperature during candle making is very important. If pouring is too hot or too cold, cracks may appear on the surface.
Solution: The temperature of the room when making candles needs to be tested, and we need to adjust the temperature to find the most suitable conditions. Pouring at a slightly higher temperature will usually give better results.
Reason 4: Excessive stirring or vigorous stirring
Too much stirring, or stirring too vigorously, can create small air bubbles in the wax, which can become trapped as the candle cools. The bubbles then get smaller and smaller until they burst, which causes the surface to crack.
Solution: When pouring into the container, stir slowly and evenly. Re-melt the surface of the candle with a heat gun, this will help smooth the surface and fill in cracks!
Reason 5: Candles cooling unevenly
As the candle cools, if the candle containers are close together, the heat will accumulate on the adjacent sides, the sides of the jar will cool more slowly than the rest, and they will cool unevenly.
Solution: The jars should be kept 2 - 3 inches apart. While your candles are cooling, place a wire rack or towel under the candles to cool from the bottom up so that the candles cool more evenly.
Reason 6:Too much liquid was poured into containers and the speed was too fast.
Solution: Use the pouring pot to slowly pour an appropriate amount of wax liquid into the container.
